Athens, 12 May 2025 – United Fiber, a wholly owned subsidiary of United Group and the company behind the design and deployment of the region’s next-generation fiber infrastructure, has confirmed that construction of its new Athens–Thessaloniki underground route remains on schedule for completion in October 2025. Once built, this critical asset will be marketed by United Group International (UGI), United Group’s dedicated wholesale and commercialisation arm.
This new route is a cornerstone of United Fiber’s infrastructure expansion in Southeast Europe. It will offer a future-proof, high-capacity connection designed to meet growing demand from hyperscalers, OTTs, and carriers. By commercialising the asset, UGI is helping position Greece as a major digital gateway between the Eastern Mediterranean, Central Europe and the Middle East.
“This route represents exactly the kind of infrastructure today’s digital economy demands—and UGI is ready to bring it to market in the most flexible, service-oriented way possible.” said Paolo Ficini, CEO of UGI.
A Resilient Route in a Rapidly Evolving Market
Greece’s strategic location is attracting next-generation subsea cable systems and hyperscaler interest, yet the existing backbone still largely relies on legacy aerial fiber or constrained capacity. United Fiber’s fully underground Athens–Thessaloniki route directly addresses this gap with:
- Physically diverse and climate-resilient construction
- Ultra-low latency and enhanced capacity
- Direct interconnection with United Group’s 50,000+ km fiber network spanning Southeast and Central Europe
The route also integrates with new United Fiber builds extending toward Bulgaria and Turkey, forming a broader high-performance corridor for East-West data transit.
Wholesale Services via UGI
UGI, as the commercialisation entity, will offer a full suite of services over the new infrastructure, including:
- IRU dark fiber and alien wavelength offerings
- Managed and unmanaged MPLS
- IP transit, capacity services, and carrier Ethernet
- Data centre integration and co-location options
All services are backed by 24/7 supervision, strict SLAs and tailored support to enable partners to deploy scalable, latency-sensitive applications.
Enabling Growth, Unlocking Value
With the Greek digital economy surging – driven by investments in AI, cloud infrastructure and data centres – this route will serve as foundational infrastructure for future growth. UGI’s open-access, carrier-neutral model ensures diverse global players can capitalise on this new capacity.
“Our role is to bring United Fiber’s investments to market efficiently and reliably,” added Ficini. “UGI bridges cutting-edge infrastructure and commercial opportunity, helping the region meet its digital potential.”
Looking Ahead
The Athens–Thessaloniki fiber route is part of a larger strategic roadmap by United Fiber and UGI, including:
- Expanding regional connectivity through cross-border builds
- Partnering with national and EU stakeholders on digital infrastructure
- Scaling software-defined, AI-ready platforms
